This course introduces the fundamental metabolic processes that enable microorganisms to grow, survive, and adapt in diverse environments. It covers the pathways involved in energy production, including glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, respiration, fermentation, and photosynthesis. Students will learn how bacteria utilize different carbon, nitrogen, and energy sources through various metabolic strategies. The course also explores aerobic, anaerobic, chemoautotrophic, chemolithotrophic, and phototrophic metabolism, along with their industrial and environmental significance. By the end of the course, students will gain a strong understanding of microbial bioenergetics and the applications of microbial metabolism in biotechnology, medicine, agriculture, and environmental microbiology.
